Canberra comes to Leeming
Leeming will get a taste of Canberra life on Wednesday (April 8) when
Federal Parliament’s Standing Committee on Education and Training
descends on the suburb for a meeting.
Leeming Senior High
School students and teachers arriving for classes in the morning will
be joined by the long white Commonwealth cars which are customarily
used to shuttle politicians around on their travels.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 9am and finish at 3pm, and is open to the public.
Federal Member for Tangney Dennis Jensen, a committee member who
proposed the meeting be held in Leeming, said such events were central
to Australian democracy.
“These committee meetings are
effectively small parliamentary sittings, and give residents the chance
to see their representatives, and tax dollars, at work,” he said.
“I’d urge anyone who has an interest in see first-hand how government
functions to come along,” added Dr Jensen, who is also a resident of
Leeming.
Members of the public who wish to attend the meeting should report first to the school’s administration office.
Parliamentary committee meetings are held all around Australia, The
Standing Committee on Education and Training is to meet in Adelaide on
Tuesday, ahead of Wednesday’s meeting in Leeming.
