Fiona Stanley Hospital

Tangney Hospital on time, on budget and a cut above ther rest

Tangney Hospital on time, on budget and a cut above ther rest

I had the great pleasure of touring the Fiona Stanley Hospital Construction Site. I am sure you have watched keenly as this site has gone from planning stage to the impressive structure growing before our eyes.

It’s exciting to see the progress being made on Fiona Stanley Hospital just 21 months into construction. It’s also pleasing to see how a Liberal government can keep a major healthcare project ahead of time and on budget.

The Fiona Stanley Hospital in Tangney will be the most state-of-the-art hospital we have ever seen in WA, a leader in clinical care, research and education, supported by an innovative design that uses the latest scientific, technological and medical developments.

It will also be a central hub of excellence enabling collaboration between the areas of health, education and research.
Fiona Stanley will provide increased capacity for intern placements. More student doctors will be able to complete their training, qualify as practitioners and provide health care services where they are needed most, in Tangney and beyond.

The 783-bed hospital will include:

• A full range of acute medical and surgical services.

• The State burns service.

• The 140-bed State rehabilitation service.

• State-of-the-art emergency care which will support a major trauma centre

• Comprehensive cancer services including radiotherapy treatment facilities, medical oncology and haematology.

• Renal transplantation and dialysis services.

• A mental health unit containing a secure wing and a mother and baby unit.

• Obstetrics and neonatology services.

• Child and adolescent services.

• Facilities for pathology, bio-medical engineering and cell tissue manufacturing.

• A modern medical imaging centre that will provide fast and accurate information to clinicians

• A world-class medical research facility to be built in conjunction with WA universities and the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research.

• Fiona Stanley Hospital will be a major adult trauma centre and will replace Fremantle Hospital as the 24- hour emergency care provider servicing Perth’s southern suburbs and regional Western Australia.

• The 140-bed State rehabilitation service will be housed in a new building adjacent to the main hospital. Patients will benefit from adjacent gardens and therapeutic outdoor areas.

• The new comprehensive cancer service has been developed around its own private courtyard and will have its own entrance and drop-off area to improve privacy for patients and their visitors.

• The State burns service will provide comprehensive care for up to 275 inpatients and 3,500 outpatients from across Western Australia each year. The service will provide a seamless transition from hospital to the home through its programs and clinics, resulting in a shorter hospital stay and increased patient satisfaction.

Fiona Stanley Hospital in Tangney will be Western Australia's flagship health facility something we, as Western Australians, can all be very proud of.
The Hospital is also the largest building infrastructure project ever undertaken by the State Government, the equivalent of four city blocks, with more than 150,000sqm of floor space across five main buildings.
The final cost of the Fiona Stanley Hospital will be $2 billion, which includes the Federal Government contribution of $255.7 million for the new State rehabilitation service.
As your Federal Member for Tangney I am proud of the work this State Government has done to get the hospital off the ground and moving towards completion.

I offer my congratulations to our State Minister for Health Dr Kim Hames and his team for the marvellous work they have done on this project but I will leave the final word on the hospital to a very special, life saving Western Australian;

“The Fiona Stanley Hospital will be more advanced than any hospital we have seen in WA before. It will be a central hub of excellence enabling collaboration between the areas of health, education and research. In my area of speciality – burns – our current facilities cannot compare with the state-of-the-art facilities possible in a new top-line hospital.”

Clinical Professor Fiona Wood
Director, Western Australian Burns Service

I look forward to updating you further with a comprehensive  breifing document which will be sent out to the electorate in the near future.
